University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden: more details about the clinic

Germany, Dresden

The history of the University Hospital Dresden, or the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden which is the formal name of this hospital, began 300 years ago. Back at that time the main function of this hospital was to communicate basic medical knowledge to military surgeons. Later on the Collegium Medico Chirurgicum became the ground for a clinical hospital which continued to expand. Now it is the only interdisciplinary hospital in East Saxony.

The modern University Hospital Dresden includes:

  • 26 clinical units
  • 4 institutes
  • 3 interdisciplinary centers
  • 50 000 inpatients every year
  • 1250 beds for long-term treatment
  • 120000 outpatients
  • 5000 medical workers (600 doctors)

People who have been here even once are happy to call it a medical town. You can seek a solution to any medical problem here. With close bonds to the University of Technology Dresden the University Hospital Dresden is regularly supplied with the newest medicines and therapy developments.

The University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden comprises 4 main centers:

  • Internal Medicine Department brings together an elite cadre of clinicians who diagnose and then treat heart diseases, lung diseases, infectious diseases and oncology. For these purposes the department includes 2 large clinics and several separate divisions which deal with HIV/AIDS and viral hepatitis.
  • Trauma and Reconstructive Surgery Department provides help in emergencies. It also includes Pediatric Surgery,  Neurosurgery, Vascular Surgery and Anesthesia units. Reconstructive Surgery Center helps to restore limb functions lost because of traumas.
  • Women’s and children’s medical center – specialists of this center deal with genetic disorder research and neuropediatrics. They also organized separate division for hebiatrics and   obstetrics.
  • Interdisciplinary Competency Center, which includes several divisions. For example, Dresden Cancer Center with specialized Breast Center and Skin Center (where specialists treat cancer and actively teach other doctors) and Prostate Center are parts of Interdisciplinary Competency Center. Palliative division is the place where specialists in pain relief create maximum comfort for seriously sick patients.

In addition to the mentioned centers several separate hospitals specializing in dermatology, otorhinolaryngology and radiological oncology work under the auspices of the University Hospital Dresden. It also includes Eye Clinic, Nuclear Medicine Clinic, Neurology Clinic (which includes post-stroke rehabilitation) and orthopedics (with divisions of sports medicine, epidemiology and rehabilitation).
Even though all doctors of the hospital are qualified specialists and equipment and technologies are up to the level of global medicine innovations, the administration introduces new ways of keeping high quality standards. For example, every employee can track his (or her) results and compare them with the previous achievements analyzing statistical data and deciding which factors influence the quality of work. At present a special section where doctors and other employees can place useful information for their patients is being developed for the site.
All these steps contribute to friendly atmosphere in all hospital divisions and facilitates quick recovery.
